Getting what we want isn’t always the best for us. Anyone who has been a parent for more than 5 minutes can understand this concept. The Children of Israel lived in sin and wickedness until things got tough. Then they dropped to their knees, finally focused their eyes on God and cried out for His mercy. When God would answer their prayers, the Children of Israel would return to their old ways, resume their life of wickedness and soon forget all about serving God.
The determination for who will officially be our President in a couple of months has yet to be made and it has resulted in an eruption of chaos across the world. Remember, Christian – all throughout the Bible, God was faithful to His people despite His people being ruled by some of the worst men in history. Way worse than any ruler we as Americans have seen as of yet. God got them through…and His people were forced to depend on Him in incredible ways. To this day, we still talk about the faithfulness of God’s people when they were under God-hating rulers. It’s an example to us thousands of years later.
Weeks leading up to this Election, people everywhere were on their knees – perhaps for the first time in a long time. Now that a projection has been made, Christians all over have suddenly developed a despairing and pessimistic mentality as though one man was their only source of hope. If a man is chosen who we think is not fit to be President, but it keeps us on our knees, then perhaps that is God’s plan. Perhaps it is yet another extension of grace and mercy from our Lord.
This world is not our home. Life is fleeting and Christ’s return is imminent. We forget this. We think far too much about this world and far too less about our souls. Imagine if we poured over our Bibles as much as we poured over the news. God will get our attention in ways we do not understand if it means we finally forsake our sins, get our eyes off of this world and put them on Him where they belong. Perhaps God knows if He answers our prayers the way we see fit, that we, like the Children of Israel, would get up off of our knees and return to “comfortable Christianity”.
This does not mean that we become doormats or fatalistic as Christian Americans. This does not mean that we cannot speak the truth in love to those in whom we disagree. However, we need to entertain an important possibility – maybe God’s answer to our cries is a “no” because He knows what is best for us – and sometimes that means hardships that bring about a renewed passion to serve Him. Keep your hope in our Creator, Christian – and serve Him like never before.
“Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;-” Romans 12:12
