“There’s Nothing New Under the Sun” – From the Colosseum to Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

By: Jen McGee

When I first heard of Charlie Kirk’s shooting, I was literally in the middle of teaching the kids about the Colosseum in Rome and its shameful history.  As most are aware, it was a place where wicked onlookers chanted and cheered for the death of Christians. These despicable people gleefully watched heroes of the faith die brutal deaths – simply to satisfy their thirst for gory entertainment.

“There’s nothing new under the sun”, as Solomon reminds us in Ecclesiastes.

And I 100% agree.

I had just been recounting tale after tale of believers, hundreds of years ago, being persecuted for unashamedly proclaiming the truths of Jesus. And then I heard the news of Charlie’s assassination. “There is nothing new under the sun.” Reading these accounts in the Bible and in history felt moving, but far away. Charlie’s death felt close and personal. We hear terrible stories of Christians being persecuted in this world, but it has rarely come quite so close to our own doorstep. And that hit differently.

Sadly, just as the wicked onlookers did when watching believers die for their faith those many years ago, the wicked hearts of the lost have not changed. Though they may not be standing in arenas, so many of the wicked have clapped their hands in excitement, while proverbially foaming at the mouth as they watched the video of Charlie’s assassination.

Cheering on the brutal death of a bold believer in Jesus.

It’s evil. It’s wicked. It’s wrong.

And I have no problem saying so.

There is truly nothing new under the sun. It was wrong in the Colosseum, and it’s wrong now.

Charlie was a martyr. And the day of his death felt indescribably dark.

But since then? Though I’ve experienced waves of sadness and confusion, I mostly see evidence of how his senseless and angering assassination has awakened a sleeping giant. Christians have been lazy, lukewarm, and complacent for far too long.

Charlie’s murder has been a slap in the face that we are in a very real, spiritual battle. We cannot waste our precious lives sitting on the sidelines and allowing a select few to fight on the front lines. ALL followers of Jesus must put on our spiritual armor and go into each day ready for war.

Thank you, Lord, for giving us this sobering reminder to use our limited time to spread your Good News to a lost and dying world.

Though Satan thinks he’s triumphed, and though dark hearts cheer for our demise, we stand strong knowing we are privileged to serve the Creator and King of Kings – and we are on the winning side.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” – Ephesians 6:10-13https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%206&version=KJV
