Ready or Not: The Appointment We All Keep

Our world has been reminded, yet again, that life is short, and death is no respecter of persons. Reading the tragic stories of sweet little girls dying in floods that happened just an hour from my house has been nearly unbearable. And not just little girls. People of all ages. Entire families, even. These tragedies are just too much to process. And frankly, we don’t like to think of sad things or tragedies. To be fair, the internet has forced sad story after sad story from all over the world into our minds. Maybe we weren’t meant to know all of these sad things. Maybe it’s too heavy for our hearts to process.

However, on the other hand, reality can provide so many lessons we truly need to learn. We love living in fantastical, Utopian bubbles where we, and our loved ones, are invincible. But, as I learned at the age of 11, when I stood at the foot of my Grandpa’s bed, and watched the cancer take his last breath, death is coming for all of us. Whether we want to face this reality or not, we all have an appointed time to die (Hebrews 9:27-28). Death doesn’t care about your age, or your skin color, or your social status. It will come for each of us. Are you ready??

If you are waiting on this corrupted, fallen world to direct you to actual truth, you are wasting your precious time. We live in a world that touts its knowledge of all things, yet at the end of the day, isn’t advanced enough in its education to even predict a flood in time to properly save lives. That’s the system we want to buy into as our moral compass and provider of truth?  We think this world truly understands how humans came into existence? We want to ride daily, trending waves of redefined “morality” and expect to have a solid foundation to get us through this life? We are comfortable putting our eternal destination in the hands of mere humans when humans can’t even get the weather right?

It’s been said that we would either have to know everything to know anything, or we would have to know THE ONE who knows everything, to know anything. JESUS is the answer. This means we can live in an ever-changing world with its daily discoveries and changing opinions, and know we are firmly grounded in the unchanging, solid truth of God’s Word – an ancient book that has stood the test of time.

So what is the truth? The truth is that we are sinners who broke God’s moral law, but we were created by a HOLY, LOVING God who wants us to come to Him for salvation and a purpose to live. The truth is, yes, we do have an “appointed time” to die, and after this will be the judgment. But, the GOOD NEWS (that you won’t find on local news outlets) is that Jesus died for us to take our punishment, and conquered death so that we could have true salvation. Salvation that transcends death on this earth after our time has run out. Salvation that gives us an eternal home in Heaven. Not because of you or me. But because of Jesus alone.

Don’t put your faith and trust in mere humans who are still learning new things every day. Don’t place your trust in people whose opinions and decisions are always shifting. Trust the ONE who made us. The One who loves us, died for us, rose for us, has a purpose for us, and spelled out that purpose in the pages of Scriptures. Trust JESUS as your Savior and your solid foundation.

THAT is a truth we can base our entire lives on. THAT is a truth that gives us hope amidst great tragedy. And THAT is a hope that properly prepares us for our last breath on this earth.
